- Some tips on floorplans
Posted on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019
Before your home is built, floorplans act as the ultimate guide to help you visualize the space. We understand that sometimes floorplans can be a bit confusing. The symbolic language can seem foreign and you want to ensure that you're visualizing your home as accurately as possible.
Here are some pointers to help you understand your floorplan:
- Square Footage
In Canada, there are no national standards for measuring square footage, so measurements may vary depending on the developer (ie. plans may measure from outer wall vs. inner wall). If you're unsure, don't be scared to ask how the measurements are done. - Symbols
Floorplans convey a lot of information including walls, windows, doors, toilets, sinks etc. All of these features are represented by symbols. Symbols can vary from plan to plan, but learning what the symbols represent will help you understand your floorplan.
- Dimensions
Dimensions are always presented as width by length. For example, a room that is 10'x12' is 10 feet wide by 12 feet long. Design drawings typically only include individual room dimensions and occasionally measurements for the length and width of the whole house. - Scale
To get an idea of scale, it can help to refer to an existing space. Real-life measurements can help you imagine rooms and how traffic would flow. Think about the space. If you entertain a lot, will there be enough room for you guests? Does your furniture fit comfortably? Will the placement of the windows give you enough light? These are all things to consider.
